GOSSIP GIRL 6x5: "Monstrous Ball"

Cotillion strikes again! As Sage prepares for her society debut, Serena discovers that Steven is planning to propose - which naturally sends everyone scheming to prevent the big moment. Blair attempts to capitalize on her provocative new reputation for her fashion line, after Dan gets in her head once again with a glowing chapter on Chuck for his serial. At last, the drama we've been waiting for!

Yet another Jenny shout-out. Taylor Momsen must be thrilled.

Hallelujah! It's almost as if Gossip Girl knew that I was close to giving up, because they turned out an episode that was such a step up in quality that I actually found myself not only interested again - but actually excited. I'm not sure how much of this has to do with director Amy Hecklerling, but it certainly didn't hurt.

I've always been a sucker for GG's cotillion episodes, and this final coming-out installment kept the storylines moving and the betrayals & backstabbings rapid-fire. Serena was naturally over the moon about her impending engagement to Steven, even though the stars in her eyes were more diamond-related than the stuff of true love. Blair's agreement with Sage to delay said proposal is unsurprisingly destined to fail...and for once it wasn't Georgina's fault!

It was about time for the pointless Serena/Steven relationship to be over, even if I hate the fact that Sage ultimately won. Lily is strangely starting to take after her daughter when it comes to being clueless, letting herself be manipulated by Blair, Bart, Ivy, and at this point probably even Vanya. Oy.

Are things finally back on track? We only have 5 episodes left, but if they can manage not to lose the momentum they've built with the big sex tape reveal (and its consequences), we could be in good shape. Fingers double-crossed!

Next, on Gossip Girl:

Blair gets ready for her mother's imminent arrival, but is unprepared for the set of demands her mother puts upon her. Serena volunteers to help Dan find a new place to live, but their time together brings up unexpected emotions. With Ivy's help, Chuck discovers there is evidence incriminating his father in illegal activities and enlists the help of Nate to retrieve it. Meanwhile, Rufus and Ivy are excited about their art gallery opening until they find an empty RSVP list and must scramble to find another way to make the event a success.
